Salat al-Istikhara - The prayer of divine consultation

What is the consultation prayer?

Salat al-Istikhara (consultation prayer) is a recommended prayer that a Muslim performs when hesitating between two permissible choices. It is a request for guidance from Allah to lead us to what is best in this life and the Hereafter.

What is it for?

  • Ask Allah to choose what is best for us
  • Submit completely to Allah in important decisions
  • Find tranquility of heart when facing difficult choices
  • Avoid following only our desires or limited reasoning
  • Strengthen our trust in Allah (Tawakkul)

How to perform it?

  1. Perform ablutions (Wudu)
  2. Have a sincere intention to ask Allah for guidance
  3. Pray 2 units of supererogatory prayer (Rakats)
  4. After the final Salam, recite the Istikhara dua
  5. In the dua, clearly mention your concern or choice
  6. Submit completely to Allah and accept His decision

When to perform it?

  • When hesitating between two permissible choices (marriage, work, travel, major purchase, etc.)
  • At any time except forbidden prayer times
  • Best time: the last third of the night
  • Can be repeated multiple times (3, 5 or 7 times) if no clear guidance is felt
  • Don't look for dreams or special signs, but observe what Allah facilitates

The Istikhara Dua (Supplication)

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ

اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ

وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ

Transliteration

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika al-'adhim...

Translation

"O Allah! I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, I seek Your help through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. For You are capable and I am not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, then make me content with it."

Important tips

  • Don't look for dreams or mystical signs: observe what Allah facilitates in your life
  • After the prayer, act according to what seems most reasonable
  • If one option becomes easy and the other difficult, that's often Allah's answer
  • Be satisfied with the result, for it is Allah who has chosen for you
  • Istikhara is only for permissible (halal) choices
  • Also consult trustworthy and knowledgeable people
  • Repeat the prayer if you still don't feel clarity (up to 7 times)

The consultation prayer is an act of devotion and trust in Allah. It reminds us that our knowledge is limited and that Allah alone knows what is best for us.
